Kenya's 2027 School Calendar: Plan Your Transport Now
Published: 26 October 2026
Schools have closed for the long holiday, and most directors are already thinking about January. This year there is an extra question on the planning list: what will the 2027 school year actually look like? The Ministry of Education has said the term structure is changing, but at the time of writing the full calendar has not been published. For anyone who runs school transport, that is worth planning around now rather than in the first week of term.
What the Ministry has said so far
In June, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that school terms would be rationalised from the next academic year. “The first term is 12 weeks, the second term is 14 weeks, and the third term is 9 weeks. We are now going to rationalise that and have 12 weeks across the board,” he said, as reported by Kenyans.co.ke. The stated aim is to make sure learners “do not get exhausted”.
On 20 October, Education News reported that the Ministry is planning to restructure the 2027 calendar into three terms of approximately 12 weeks each, and that teachers, parents and school administrators are still waiting for the official calendar to confirm opening dates, holidays and examination schedules.
Arena reported that the long holiday runs to Friday, 1 January 2027, with Term 1 opening on Monday, 4 January 2027. It also noted that a version of the 2027 calendar circulating online keeps the old pattern and should be treated as a proposal, not an official Ministry document. Until the circular is out, confirm every date against the Ministry of Education’s own publications before you commit to it.
Why a calendar change is a transport question
Term dates drive almost every transport decision a school makes. If the terms move to roughly equal lengths, that is likely to mean a shorter second term, a longer third term and different half-term and closing dates from the ones your team is used to. Each of those affects:
- Contracts and fees. Many transport agreements and fee schedules are priced per term. A term that is a different length may need a different figure.
- Driver and vehicle availability. Servicing, inspections and driver leave are often planned around holidays. If the holidays move, so does the window for that work.
- Parent communication. Opening days, half-term pickups and closing days generate the most calls to the school office. A new calendar means more of them, at least in the first year.
None of this needs final dates to get started. It needs a plan that can absorb the dates once they are confirmed.
A 2027 transport planning checklist for school leaders
Use the holiday to work through this list with your bursar and transport manager.
- Check what has been published before every major decision. Look for the official 2027 calendar circular on the Ministry of Education website rather than relying on date tables shared online.
- Build your Term 1 plan on confirmed dates only. Prepare routes and schedules for opening week, but keep half-term and closing dates marked as provisional until the circular is out.
- Review transport contracts for term-length assumptions. If a contract or fee is set per term, check what happens if a term is longer or shorter. For example, a clause that adjusts the fee by the number of school weeks (an illustrative example only; get your own legal and financial advice on wording).
- Move vehicle servicing into this holiday. The long break is a known window. Do not wait for a holiday whose dates may change next year.
- Update your route and rider lists before January. Confirm which learners will use the bus in Term 1, new pickup points, and any families who have moved.
- Agree how you will tell parents about date changes. Decide who sends the message, through which channel, and how quickly, once the official calendar is released.
- Plan for the busy days. Opening day, half-term and closing day put the most pressure on drivers, staff and the school gate. Put extra staff on those days in the 2027 plan.
- Keep a record of what changed. Note route, timing and contract changes made for 2027 so you can review them at the end of each term.
Where MyRide fits
A changing calendar means more changes to routines, and parents want to know what is happening on the days that matter. MyRide helps with the day-to-day side of school transport: parents see the bus’s live location and get pickup and drop-off alerts in the MyRide Guardian app, and the school dashboard keeps trip and attendance records you can refer back to when you review a term. MyRide is registered with Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).
